With around 1.8 million multi-generational households in the UK, it is important to make your bathroom an ‘inclusive living design’ so that everyone can shower and wash easily.

Mira Showers – the UK’s leading shower manufacturer – is proud to introduce the new Mira Select Flex: a new mixer shower designed in partnership with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to support a wide range of accessibility needs.

Dave Pixton, Senior Industrial Designer at Mira Showers, explains the story behind the Select Flex.

“When designing with inclusive living in mind, it’s important to consider not only the physical space but also sustainability and social equality. Therefore, the design of a bathroom, and more specifically a shower, requires a truly holistic approach that accounts for all age groups

 and abilities.  “

Perfectly suited for homeowners with accessibility needs, Mira Select Flex is the UK’s leading inclusively designed mixer shower, supporting users with a wide range of accessibility needs, including those with limited visual acuity, dexterity, or mobility, as well as vulnerable users.

Developed using the same inclusive design principles as the market-leading Mira Advance, this innovative addition to the Mira Select Flex range leverages cutting-edge technology to offer inclusivity and sustainability, setting new standards in shower design and functionality, to enable more confident independent showering, and easier assisted care showering.

Effortless Flexibility, Ultimate Accessibility

This innovative shower has been specifically designed to provide an enhanced accessible showering experience that can be used whether standing, seated or with the assistance of a carer.

Featuring a visually optimised design developed in conjunction with the RNIB, it is the only RNIB ‘Tried and Tested’ accredited mixer shower.

Mira carefully considered every user interaction during the product’s development. They thoroughly tested it with users to make sure the design was safe and enjoyable for people with impairments or disability.

Visually Optimised, Accessible Design

A shower with simple Push Button Controls for the temperature that you love.

The Mira Select Flex shower has many features that make showering easier for everyone. It has a simple push button to start the shower. You don’t need to change the temperature or water flow every time you use it. This is very helpful for people who need help when they shower.

The design of the shower helps people who cannot see well. The RNIB helped make sure of this. The shower uses bright, different colours and a surface that does not reflect light. This makes it easier to see the controls. It also has raised pictures and textures that you can feel.

  • Easy to Use: Just push a button to start the shower. No need to change the settings each time.
  • Good for People Who Need Help: Great for those who need assistance when showering.
  • Designed for Everyone: Helps people who have eyesight issues. Uses colours that stand out and a surface that doesn’t shine.
  • Feel the Controls: Has raised pictures and textures that help you find and use them by touch.

A shower that is easy to hold and adjust

The Mira Select Flex shower is easy for everyone to use. It has special controls made for comfort. These include:

  • Easy-Grip Handles: There is a loop-handle lever for setting the temperature and another lever for water flow. They are easy to hold and use.
  • Sound Feedback: The shower makes sounds to help you know you’ve made changes.

These features help people who have difficulty moving their hands or fingers.

The shower also has a special bar that lets you change the height of the showerhead with one hand. You can move it up or down whether you are standing or sitting.

  • Easy Height Adjustment: Move the showerhead up or down easily, even with one hand.
  • Gentle Water Spray: The showerhead has a soft spray setting. This is good for people with sensitive skin.
  • Built-in Temperature Control: Adjusts the temperature and makes sure the water doesn’t suddenly become too hot or too cold.

Designed to Last

Tested for 100 years of use and wear!

Internally tested beyond average lifetime use, Mira Select Flex ensures durability through design and materials, including a brass valve and TMV3 approval. Durability is tested in several ways, including testing to simulate up to 100 years of use. Mira’s commitment to quality includes real-life testing on trial sites to provide reassurance in performance and usability.

Sustainable Design

Mira considers Design for the Environment (DfE) a core tenet of its product development as part of its environmental efforts. On the Select Flex, Mira has included the use of sustainable materials such as high-performing internals to limit environmental impact whilst providing a premium finish.

The Mira Select Flex shower can also be added to old homes to make them better. This helps the houses use less energy. It is part of the plan to cut down on how much carbon new homes put into the air by 31%. This plan is called the Part L Building Regulations.

Hear from Robin as he talks about the partnership between Mira and the RNIB

“We’re delighted to have had the opportunity to work with Mira on the Select project”, says Robin Spinks, Head of Inclusive Design at RNIB. “What we’ve seen here is a company who’s been willing to ask questions, to listen to users, to consult with expert organisations, and then to take those findings and integrate them into the design process so that what comes out at the other end is a thoughtfully designed, inclusive and pleasant to use product.”

“We’ve been collaborating with the RNIB for many years now”, Alex Hyslop, Marketing Director at Mira Showers, added. “We worked with them on our Mira Advance electric shower, which is well-recognised as the best in its class. We believe that working with expert organisations, such as the RNIB and occupational therapists, helps us bring the very best product to market.

“I’m proud of the new Select Flex, as it exemplifies inclusive design and putting the end user at the centre of the design process, to make showering accessible for everyone.”
