  • What One Hungarian Disability Retailer Can Teach the UK About Independent Living
by Duncan Edwards on 31st July 2026 at 1:16 pm

Hungary's disability equipment system differs from the UK's, but many of the same barriers remain. This article explains how funding, accessible customer service and practical equipment advice affect disabled people and family carers. It also explores lessons UK retailers and policymakers can take from Értéksziget's customer-first approach, showing that independent living often depends as much on clear information as on the equipment itself. This website isn’t just a shop — it’s the home of disability-led innovation. We exist because Clare refused to let a spinal injury limit her independence. Out of that determination, she invented the Trabasack — a unique wheelchair lap tray and bag in one.

For 16 years, we’ve supported disabled innovators and entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into award-winning solutions. Every product we stock has been shaped by lived experience, designed to solve real barriers, and proven in everyday life.

From independence tools like the Trabasack to new creations from disabled entrepreneurs, Disability Horizons Shop is where solutions are invented, tested and shared with the community.

Why We Exist Our company began with a problem. After a spinal injury, Clare struggled with everyday tasks like eating and working from her wheelchair. Instead of accepting barriers, she created the Trabasack — a lap tray and bag that gave her back independence.

Duncan, a disability advocate and entrepreneur, saw how powerful disabled-led solutions could be. Together, we built this marketplace run by disabled people, for disabled people.

For over 16 years, we’ve turned lived challenges into award-winning products. We’re not ordinary retailers — we’re inventors, collaborators, and supporters of disabled entrepreneurs.

Our mission is simple:

  • Champion disability innovation
  • Launch practical solutions that work in real life
  • Prove that accessibility and good design go hand in hand

Every product we offer carries that story of experience, invention, and independence.
