Bed Wedge Mattress Lifter Review

What is the Bed Wedge Mattress Lifter?

Mattress lifters are simple yet effective tools designed to make the task of bed-making easier and quicker. Getting into bed at the end of a long day can be a relief, however, making the bed can be a struggle. The bed wedge mattress lifter aims to make managing your bed sheet easier and less of a chore. Mattresses, with their bulky size and weight, can be quite a challenge for anyone to handle, but especially for older people or people dealing with disabilities or health conditions.

Our writer Lucy Currier reviews the Bed wedge mattress lifter, An innovative product that makes light work of making a bed by taking the weight of the mattress.

Bed Wedge Mattress Lifter Review by Lucy

I cannot make my bed and currently, my parents help me. They find mattresses heavy so I hoped this product would make it easier. I was shown the new Bed Wedge Mattress Lifter at Naidex on the Disability Horizons Shop stand and was keen to try it.

Why was this mattress lifter made?

The team at the Disability Horizons shop is always looking for ways to make the lives of people with disabilities or health conditions easier. The Shop Manager, Duncan, looked at the current mattress lifters available and found that the original BedMadeEZ from the USA was not available but other sales platforms have been flooded with cheap plastic Chinese-made mattress lifters. Some are too flimsy to work and they are all very ugly looking and made of garish and unsustainable plastic. Identifying a need, a wooden bed mattress lifter was commissioned and produced exclusively for the DH Shop. It is made in the UK by the bespoke furniture makers Griffin And Sinclair, from UK sourced oak. We’ve called it “The Bed Wedge”.

Rosalind and her husband Daniel Griffin, outside thier bespoke furniture workshop
Rosemary and Daniel Griffin, lead the team of artisan furniture makers at their workshop in Nottinghamshire. The Bed Wedges are made in small batches here.

What is the Bed Wedge Mattress Lifter?

The bed wedge mattress lifter is a wedge-shaped piece of wood that is designed to go underneath your mattress and aid in lifting it, hence the name!

It is made of solid oak and is handcrafted. It comes wrapped in tissue paper and when I first saw it it looked like a block of cheese. Unfortunately, I unwrapped it before taking pictures and was unable to rewrap it so it looked anything other than a misshapen lump!

The Bed Wedge’s shape is rounded at the top with a nice big handle for holding it. It is also extremely light, I could barely tell I was holding anything. The specifications for the product say 400g but if you’re anything like me numbers don’t mean much until you have to try and lift something. The wedge is also extremely smooth, it’s obvious that a lot of time has been spent on it.

How does the bed wedge mattress lifter work?

Essentially, a mattress lifter is a wedge-like tool that slides between your mattress and bed frame (or box spring) to create a small gap. This gap allows you to pull your sheets through without exerting too much effort or causing potential damage to your nails or back. The Bed Wedge is very easy to use. I thought the mattress would initially have to be lifted to enable the wedge to be placed underneath and then it would hold the mattress up. In reality, the thinnest part of the wedge can be pushed at the mattress and because the wedge gets incrementally thicker the product itself lifts the mattress for you.

Having pushed the wedge underneath the mattress there is now no lifting to be done and once the bed wedge mattress lifter is in place it can be left there. This gives you two hands-free with which to tuck your sheet in.

Another option is to drape your sheet loosely over the mattress and then use the bed wedge mattress lifter to push the sheet underneath. This is done by placing the wedge at the place on the sheet that you want under the mattress and poking it with the wedge in a forward motion until that piece of bedsheet has disappeared underneath. This is not as precise as using the product to hold parts of the mattress up whilst tucking in the sheet on either side with your hands but if you lack hand function this way of using the product means you don’t need any. This is the way I tried to use the wedge and it worked.Bed wedge mattress lifter used to push the sheet under the mattress

Benefits of using a Mattress Lifter

Mattress lifters offer a back-saving bed-making experience that’s beneficial for anyone, but particularly older or disabled people. It speeds up a morning chore for everyone.

Anyone who finds tucking or untucking bedsheets would find this mattress lifter useful. It eliminates the need to physically lift the mattress with your body as the wedge does take the weight.

The Bed Wedge does not enable me to make my own bed as I don’t have the reach but I could tuck and untuck the parts of my bed I could reach. It will definitely be used as it will reduce the effort needed for people to make my bed on my behalf.

User Experiences with Mattress Lifters

Looking at the reviews around the web, people have reported big improvements in their bed-making efforts after using a mattress lifter. It has helped people with heavy mattresses, those recovering from surgeries, and even those with severe rheumatoid arthritis.

We have a Tempur-pedic king size bed that is extremely heavy which makes changing the sheets a very challenging chore! I came across this item and seeing it was a reasonable price and looked sturdy I thought I would give it a try. Well I am so VERY happy I did!!! It is extremely well made, light weight and tucks the bottom and top sheets under the heavy mattress with no effort! I am 71 years old with arthritis in both hands and the chore I hated is no longer a problem. Whoever invented this, I thank you VERY much!!! Job well done❤️!

Adjustable Beds and Mattress Lifters

Adjustable and profiling beds are something that many disabled people have to improve comfort and be able to sit up and move legs and help with pressure issues in bed. Those people with a profiling bed know that a common problem is that sheets can become untucked, leading to discomfort and annoyance. The bed wedge can quickly help with this, if you have a carer or relative who can whizz around and tuck them in again for you.

Other Uses of Mattress Lifters

Apart from bed-making, mattress lifters can also be used for changing bed skirts. They can also be used to tuck in your top sheet, blankets, quilts, and bedspead neatly, making the entire process much smoother and easier.

To Sum up

Maybe if you’ve never thought about how difficult making a bed is, then this gadget would make a good gift for a relative, because for others it can be a real strain and frustrating for those who have always prided themselves on a very neat and tidy bed! It is a practical tool that reduces strain and effort, and when not in use, it adds a touch of elegance to your shelf. So, if you’re looking for a solution to make the task of bed-making easier, the bed wedge mattress lifter is a product worth considering. Made of solid oak it will last a lifetime and won’t hurt the planet, but unlike the plastic alternatives, will not be around in 10,000 years!
