The background of Harris Tweed
Harris Tweed is made and manufactured on a small island at the top of Scotland called the Isle of Harris. The island itself is situated in a chain of islands called the Outer Hebrides.
It is here at the actual Harris Tweed head office where the wool is sorted, dyed, combed and spun. What makes Harris Tweed so very special is that any cloth that is officially Harris Tweed is woven in a weaver’s shed on the island.
So every key chain, suit, hat, scarf, or bag that you see with the iconic orb logo was woven by hand in someone’s home.
Much like Champagne from the Champagne Region of France – if it’s not made in the Outer Hebrides, it’s not Harris Tweed.
The cloth was originally called Tweel, the Scot name for ‘twill’ since it is woven in a twilled pattern. Legend has it that a merchant in London received a letter about some ‘tweels’ but he misread the word as ‘tweed’ and the name stuck.
Harris Tweed is often made in a range of earth tones – such as greens, browns and reds – because the wool was originally dyed with lichen and other natural dyes found on the islands.
This also reflects it’s most common use as the natural colours help the wearer to blend into wooded, outdoor environments.
Harris Tweed is now dyed with chemical dyes and is made in a much larger range of colours, including oranges and yellows to appeal to a range of tastes and create unique clothing and accessories.

The benefits of having a RADAR key
These solid brass, Gold Standard keys are manufactured by The Radar Key Company in Britain. The keys have always been and remain, reliable, accurate and very easy to grip.
The keys have to reliably work every single time, on whichever lock they are inserted into, because the disabled person rarely has another toilet locally which they can use, while the alternatives are distressing.
The RADAR key features include:
- a unique handle with raised edges for extra grip
- octagonal shaft for easy identification by feel.
- no sharp weld flash to cut fingers or obstruct insertion into lock
- one piece- no potential weak points from welding error.
- fully rounded nose to aid easy insertion into lock.
- bevelled keystop to aid removal from door.
Every single key is tested on two different Radar locks by a British master locksmith.
Who is eligible for a RADAR key?
Qualification is by self certification. You must have a mental or physical disability which is helped by using the key to access the specialist facilities available in accessible or Changing Places toilets plus countryside walks/ accessible routes within buildings.
